Taxotere® Lawsuit

Are you experiencing permanent hair loss after Chemotherapy?

Taxotere® (Docetaxel) is an anti-cancer chemotherapy drug that is given intravenously for patients suffering from:

  • Breast cancer
  • Non-small cell lung cancer
  • Advanced stomach cancers
  • Head and neck cancers
  • Metastastic prostate cancer

Taxotere has been linked to alopecia, or permanent hair loss, and there is evidence that Sanofi-Aventis, the company that markets Taxotere, failed to warn patients and physicians of this risk. In fact, In December 2015, the Food and Drug Administration took action to force Sanofi to warn patients and doctors of the risk of permanent alopecia associated with Taxotere.

What Taxotere is and how it works

Taxotere belongs to a class of chemotherapy drugs called plant alkaloids. Plant alkaloids are made from plants, and they attack cancer cells during various phases of cell division. Plant alkaloids like Taxotere inhibit the interior structure within the cancer cell, killing it. Patients usually received the drug through an hour-long infusion once every three weeks.

The FDA first approved Taxotere for patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer in December 1999. In 2004 and 2006, the FDA also approved the drug for use in patients with prostate, breast, gastric, and head and neck cancers. Taxotere has been one of the most prescribed and most lucrative drugs in its class. The majority of breast cancer cases in the United States are treated with Taxotere, and 300,000 women are diagnosed with the disease every year. In 2009 alone, Taxotere made over $3 billion for Sanofi before the company lost patent protection.

Taxotere risks and the adverse side effects reported.

Studies have linked Taxotere to a disfiguring side effect: alopecia, or permanent and irreversible hair loss. In one study, as many as 9% of breast cancer patients suffered alopecia that lasted for a decade or more. Permanent hair loss severely decreases the quality of life of cancer survivors and dramatically affects their body image. Alopecia is a constant reminder of the trauma of the disease, leading to depression and distress. As one woman suffering from Taxotere-related alopecia said, "It's devastating. ... With no hair, there is no going back to normal."

Now, breast cancer survivors and their families are filing lawsuits against Sanofi, claiming the company failed to warn them of the risk and hid research linking the chemo drug to the toxic side effects.
