When it comes to public safety, lead has been identified as a potentially dangerous metal that can have negative health consequences for those who are exposed to it. Many common items used in American homes used to contain lead. Readers of this Kentucky personal injury blog may be surprised to find out that certain personal care items still contain lead, presenting dangers to users of those care products.

In a recent decision the Food and Drug Administration determined that hair coloring products must stop using lead as an ingredient. Certain hair care products, such as those that advertise that they slowly reduce gray hairs and replace them with darker ones, have used lead because the metal is effective at sticking to hair and allowing for the build-up of color.

The FDA has stated that since there is no safe level of lead exposure, hair coloring treatments must remove the substance from their consumer goods. Many producers of lead-containing hair products have made the move away from lead, but now all that use it are required to make changes to their formulas.

Lead can cause developmental problems in children and a host of other medical problems in individuals of all ages. It is for these reasons that it has been banned from many products that consumers use. However, readers of this post should be aware that dangerous products such as hair coloring treatments containing lead may still be available in some retailers and online. If a consumer is harmed by a lead-containing product, they may want to explore their options for compensation for the damages they suffered.
