What erratic driving behaviors can mean drunk driving?

June 2, 2016

Kentucky drivers have a lot to focus on once they hit the road. Whether you’re keeping an eye out for traffic hazards or trying to spot potential dangers before they can affect you, doing what you can to prioritize your own safety is your best option.

Drunk drivers are known to cause accidents that result in the injury or even death of completely unrelated parties. For that reason, you can help make your drives safer by being able to pick out the signs of a drunk driver before they become an immediate problem to you. Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, has a list of things to keep your eyes peeled for. You could be dealing with a drunk driver if you see extensive distracted driving signs. This includes weaving, drifting, or driving over the center line. Quick speed-ups or slow-downs are also common, as are missing traffic signals.

Sometimes, more aggressive behavior can indicate a drunk driver. This includes tailgating, erratic braking, extreme speeding, or tossing things out of the vehicle while it is in motion. Generally speaking, the more erratic and extreme a driver’s behavior is, the more likely they are to get into an accident, and the unfortunate victim could very well be you.

There are some cases in which drunk drivers come out of nowhere and you have little time to prepare. However, if you spot someone driving and exhibiting these signs, it would be in your best interest to pull over to keep yourself safe, and to call the authorities to report the erratic behavior.
